Easy Silence
Answers only make more questions
Why am I here? This burning question antagonized the mind of the ebon stag as he was en route to...somewhere. Anywhere. Just as long as it was away from his past. The stag was Easy Silence, a 5 year-old thoroughbred stallion from a distant land way beyond the mountains. Long, ebon pillars carried the equally ebon, strong bodice towards the unknow destination at a fairly quick pace; it was hard to keep up an even speed over the rough turrain. Chocolate hued pools surveyed the land, noting the derepid, yet lush, state. Banner slapped against the dewy neck of Silence as he slowed beside an aqua pond. Maw lowered to the glassy surface, shattering its calm serenity. Pink ribbon lapped up the water, savouring its cool, clean taste. It had been months since he had tasted water that good. Breth exhaled deeply and sharply as he stood beneath the shade of a lonely tree. Mind whirled around the thoughts of his past as the clouds drifted by slowly overhead.
The first memory I had was of my mother. She looked exactly like me; black bodice and equally black mane. Her tail matched the hue of the mane, but was much longer in length. Her eyes were a warm hazel that made me feel safe. And her star...that marking is something I wish I had. The thing I remember most was her voice. Her voice was soft and soothing; it calmed me as a newborn. Yet, it was almost quivering as she left me. I wanted to cry out to her, to let her know how much I loved mother. I couldn't vocalize anything, and I let her leave. I stayed there for so long; it could have been hours, but I believe it was days. I felt so alone...until the new mare stepped into my life.
She was beautiful. Black and white paint with eyes similar to the lakes. Her name was Angel, and she saved me. Angel took me under her wing, so to speak, taking me back to her land. It was there I learned she was with the Darks. The stag that was her mate took a liking to me. His name was Misery. He taught me everything I needed to know in order to survive; how to fight, forage, and even treat the mares. It was like I had a father. I never would have thought my father would kick me out of the herd. But it happened. When I turned four, Misery kicked me out, telling me I needed to find my own herd. Then he smiled at me, turning his back and leaving. I was left alone...again. This time I was ready, though. I set off in search of my own land...and a place to start my own family.
I found paradise in my search. It wasn't a desert, but it was drier than other lands. There were a few trees, but it was mainly caves. It was something that I fell in love with. My claim was uttered, and I began my quest in search of a mare to become my lead, and my love. I ended up finding that in a mare named Precocious. She was a palomino quarter horse. Flaxen mane and golden coat, with caramel orbs that melted my heart. When I invited her back to my land, she agreed almost instantly. A few months later, she became my mate. The following spring, she foaled my twin fillies; Black Beauty and Daybreak. Beauty looked like me; black as coal and just as stubborn. But it was her marking that shocked me. She had a single star hiding beneath her forelock. It reminded me of mother. Beauty's sister was just as fair; a lovely buckskin bodice and black mane made her look similar to Precocious. I was happy; I had a wonderful mate and two lovely daughters. That was, until, the disasters happened.
It started with a drought. No rain had fallen in months, causing the vegetation to wilt and die and what little water we had to dry up. Things became desperate; horses were dropping dead all around and there was nothing we could do about it. We knew our only chance was to flee. I knew I had to, for the sake of my family, but I could not leave my home. I vowed to tough it out until it was absolutely necessary to leave. That day came one fine August afternoon. The drought was still going on, leaving the trees dry and prone to fires. A thunderstorm rolled through, bringing with it severe and frequent lightning strikes. A bolt of lightning struck a tree, setting it on fire. The fire spread, eating up everything in its path. My home was burning, and I knew my family had to get out. We all fled, though I lost Precocious and the twins when the fire closed in around me. I nearly cried when I told them to go on ahead, that I would see them soon. I have not seen them since; I don't even know if they survived the fire.
I managed to escape the Hellish death trap, fleeing into the Neutral lands. They did not welcome me with passion, since I was a Dark, but they allowed me to stay, providing I did not cause trouble. I behaved, thankful I even had a place to live. It would not be for long, though. It began to rain a few weeks after the fires. I knew they were put out, and I wanted to go home, but I wanted to wait until the rain subsided. It didn't. It rained for 3 weeks straight, flooding the lands. All of the Lights, Neutrals and remaining Darks huddled in the Neutral Palace, waiting for the waters to recede. Three months ago they did. I did not want to stay in the area with so many natural disasters, so I left broken hearted. Never again did I see my home...or my family.
So now I find myself here, in this new land. It is similar to that of my old home, though there is more vegetation and a bit more water. Am I really ready to start again...to love again? Yes. I have to. Still, the hope that I will see my family again will never fade. Now, I must stake my claim upon these lands, gaining a fresh start.
Silence finished his reminicing, slowly limbering over the rugged rocks of the tallest mountain in the land. Once at the peak, Silence paused, chest heaving. He looked out at the sun sinking over the horizon, casting its weary shadow upon the terra. His land. The pools of water shimmered in the setting light, and the trees looked like little sticks. Perfection. The ebon stag rose up on his hind haunches, forelegs striking out at the atmosphere. Vocals rang loud and mighty with his words of claim:
”I am Easy Silence, and I hereby claim this land as my own. May it forever be known as Silent Vicinity.”
With that, the stag returned to the ground, heading into a cave in order to gain some much needed sleep.
And everyone is running...
